Possible behavioural problems

Screaming uncontrollably - try to find the 'trigger' and work on eliminating the cause, rather than trying to force the child to stop screaming.
e.g. Incessant noise, hitting, disruptive behaviour whilst you are on the telephone, making your conversation impossible.
In this case, the trigger was the telephone ringing.

  • How the problem was solved

(1) Behaviour book1.
(2) Praise for however long the child was quiet.
(3) Step-by-step visual guide for the child to follow.
(4) Reward (immediate) e.g. smiley face in behaviour book or taken to shop for sweets.
(5) Praise the child for each uninterrupted phone call.
{6} Removal of one of the telephones, the one which had the loudest ring.

Inappropriate behaviour whilst shopping
e.g. Screaming incessantly, demanding things, throwing themself on the floor.

  • How the problem was solved

Once the behaviour book is established the child has some clue how much you appreciate his good behaviour. Find out what he would like to do, e.g. go visit a pet shop. Tell him calmly but firmly that you have to get your groceries first then as soon as you have them, you will go to the pet shop if he behaves in the supermarket.
